Strong Roots

Strong Roots was a fast-growing Irish start-up when we were asked to produce the first issue of their quarterly magazine. As always, the first step is to analyse the artwork in relation to the requested specifications and foresee any errors that may arise within the process of print.

The Brief

To produce a large quantity of full colour magazines on ethically resourced uncoated paper, with a double page spread sizing over 500mm.

When proofing the artwork style, the first issue was the vast amount of intensified colour bleed throughout and how this can be lost in uncoated papers. In order to make these colours vibrant, we needed a pulp that allows excellent print finish and colour reproduction. We also had to take into consideration the large sheet size of the magazine, coming in at a B1 size. Through our close relationship with our Irish paper suppliers we found the perfect stock. Shiro Echo Paper is the highest quality recycled stock, produced in B1 size and from 100% post-consumer recycled waste with a high colour response.

Our next obstacle was the tight deadline, with an event fast approaching, we needed the magazine printed and delivered faster than normal so we chose to print the magazine on a Komori B1 Printing Press which allows for UV Inks. UV inks are mixed with a small percentage of photoinitiators and are exposed to UV-light as an energy source. The ink hardens instantly, allowing for a faster transition from print into finishing and a faster delivery to our client.
